Millennials Are Screwed

TWITTER FACEBOOK SUBSCRIBE Why millennials are facing the scariest financial future of any generation since the Great Depression.BY MICHAEL HOBBESLike everyone in my generation, I am finding it increasingly difficult not to be scared about the future and angry about the past.I am 35 years old—the oldest millennial, the first millennial—and for a decade now, I’ve been waiting for adulthood to kick in. My rent consumes nearly half my income, I haven’t had a steady job since Pluto was a planet and my savings are dwindling faster than the ice caps the baby boomers melted.WHAT’S A MILLENNIAL ANYWAY?Unless otherwise noted, we mean anyone born between 1982 and 2004We’ve all heard the statistics. More millennials live with their parents than with roommates. We are delaying partner-marrying and house-buying and kid-having for longer than any previous generation. And, according to The Olds, our problems are all our fault: We got the wrong degree. We spend money we don’t have on things we don’t need. We still haven’t learned to code. We killed cereal and department stores and golf and napkins and lunch. Mention “millennial” to anyone over 40 and the word “entitlement” will come back at you within seconds, our own intergenerational game of Marco Polo. This is what it feels like to be young now. Not only are we screwed, but we have to listen to lectures about our laziness and our participation trophies from the people who screwed us.But generalizations about millennials, like those about any other arbitrarily defined group of 75 million people, fall apart under the slightest scrutiny. Contrary to the cliché, the vast majority of millennials did not go to college, do not work as baristas and cannot lean on their parents for help. Every stereotype of our generation applies only to the tiniest, richest, whitest sliver of young people. And the circumstances we live in are more dire than most people realize.Source: The College Board, Trends in Student Aid 2013. Zim & Zou

Zim&Zou are two french artists, based in Nancy. The duo is composed of Lucie THOMAS, born in the Vosges in 1987, and Thibault ZIMMERMANN, born in Paris in 1986. They studied graphic design (design, publishing, advertising) during three years. The duo decided to focus on installations using handcrafted objects made out of tangible materials such as paper, wood, thread, etc… rolling away from computer design. Anchored in craftsmanship, they create all the elements composing their installations by hand, from drawing to cutting and assembling.Their favorite material is the paper they’re cutting, folding and assembling to give rise to intricate and colorful sculptures. Paper inspires them for its versatility, infinite range of colors and unique textures. The flat paper sheets turned into volume are giving an installation the poetry of ephemeral material.Zim&Zou’s strenght is to be a complementary and polyvalent duo.Selected Clients – IBM, Microsoft, Hermès, TIME, The Washington Post, Der Spiegel, Centre Pompidou…Awards – ADC Young Guns Awards (New York), Illustrive Award (Berlin)

I Create Hyper-Realistic Scratch Drawings On An Ink Coated Board

Many people can’t believe that my very realistic animal artwork is created just from scratches into an ink coated board, but that is exactly how each of my works is drawn. I work in the amazing medium of Scratchboard, which helps bring my animals and wildlife to life in a hyper-realistic way that no other medium can!!Scratchboard is a unique medium because it is subtractive. I start with a solid black ink coated board and scratch away the ink with sharp tools to reveal a layer of white clay that is beneath the ink.

10+ Times Everyday Objects Were Actually Pop Culture Icons In Disguise

For those who haven’t yet heard, pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon in which the mind responds to a stimulus, usually an image or a sound, by perceiving a familiar pattern where none exists. To put it simply, it’s a bug in the human mind that causes it to see things that aren’t really there. For example, you look at a regular tap but see Ice Age’s acorn-obsessed Scrat or you glance at a juicy cinnamon roll but it becomes an anguished E.T.

Abstract Portraits by Ryan Hewett

Using photographs as a starting point for his process, Cape Town-based artist Ryan Hewett relies on memory and imagination to produce his expressive paintings. “Renowned for his brooding and evocative paintings, for South African born Hewett, the portrait is not about capturing an external likeness of a subject; but rather creating a portal to the inner journey of self-exploration. He relies principally on the free-flowing processes of memory and creative imagination. In the twelve years that he has practiced as a full-time artist, Hewett’s techniques have evolved from tightly wrought pencil drawings into the looser, layered surfaces of his present work. With his quick, almost brutal splashes of the palette knife, and through blending, building, edging, detailing and scraping off painterly layers, Hewett’s imagery is textured and richly hued, conveying both complexity and raw emotion, demanding intelligence and consideration from the viewer.”More art on the grid via Artnau

Cuttemporary Art By Sakir Gökçebag

Originally from Turkey, conceptual photographer Sakir Gökçebag creates striking arrangements and installations with everyday objects. His photograpy series ‘Cuttemporary Art’ depicts meticulously sliced fruit and vegetables, laid out in striking, methodically-created displays. Through this, Gökçebag presents an interesting play on natural and manmade imagery. A contrast arises through the precision of Gökçebag’s cuts and the organic patterns visible on the surface of the watermelons, apples and green beans, presenting an unlikely geometric view of things supposed to be eaten. By capturing his patterned creations on light grey backgrounds similar to that of professional passport photography, the objects are almost completely removed from their context as food, instead reading as interesting shapes, forms and materials that have been manipulated by the hand of an artist. Conceptual Sculptures by Adam Niklewicz

Polish-American artist Adam Niklewicz uses household objects to create thought-provoking sculptural pieces.“Niklewicz’s work thrives on surprise and plays with de-contextualization. The objects of his attention are quite ordinary. These are tables, chairs, plates and a host of other items that have a role to play in the network of daily experiences that define the practical world. Niklewicz stands back and assumes a detached view of the objects attempting to discover new and secret aspects of reality by making obvious things odd and finding playful qualities along with clear and palpable symbolism. Such contemplative detachment translates into absurd situations suspended of practicality but with healthy dose of irony and humor – all communicated through mediums ranging from sculpture, video, installation and conceptual photography.”— Tatyana Okshteyn, Black & White GalleryMore sculptures Visit his website

Blindness Light: Art Installations by Javier Martin

“Blindness Light” is a fantastic series of neon light installations by Spanish multidisciplinary artist Javier Martin, combining neon tubes and model portraits. The series aims to “explore contemporary standards of beauty by appropriating their iconography to undermine their apparent perfection”.”In the 20th century, the platonic concept of beauty as something that reflects the intrinsic, true nature of things was sidelined by the fashion, cosmetics and advertising industries based on outwards appearance and sexual attractiveness. Martin attempts to deconstruct this superficial perception of beauty by appropriating the very images that promote it. Inspired by the advertising campaigns of beautiful women one encounters on city streets, and in particular the juxtaposition between their stylized perfection and the surrounding urban grittiness, he reproduces them only to degrade their perceived perfection and question their inherent worth.”More art on the grid via Yatzer
