Thirty years ago, eight women embarked on a radical experiment in urban living: they built a communal house in central Amsterdam in which practically everything — from kitchen utensils to childcare — was shared. With co-living making a comeback, New York-based designer Irene Pereyra returned to her childhood home to learn about the story of this unusual place, and to discover what we are willing to share in our living environment on a day-to-day basis — beyond the safety of our screens.

Reggae Record Covers: Photo Series by Alex Bartsch

In his latest project, “Covers: Retracing Reggae Record Sleeves in London” photographer Alex Bartsch has thoroughly researched and identified the original locations of the cover photos on 42 reggae records. He then proceeded to photograph them on location.”By meticulously matching the record sleeves with their background, Alex has created a fascinating series that represents not only serious patience and eye for detail on his part, but also paints a picture of the history of London’s reggae scene.The records were originally photographed in various, largely obscure places around London between 1967–1987, and were selected for the project by Alex from his own record collection. To find the shoot locations Alex and Al Newman – founder of One Love Books which is aiming to publish the series – embarked on an arduous investigation to track down the artists, label owners, photographers and anyone else involved.”Alex is currently running a campaign on Kickstarter to turn the project into a book. Riding on the subway every day might seem like it’d get old, but artist Ben Rubin keeps a fresh perspective with his imaginative series Subway Doodle. The ongoing project features snapshots of New York City train cars and passengers with a fantastical twist—Rubin adds his own characters into the scenes as they “interact” with real-world surroundings in both amusing and mischievous ways. The larger-than-life creatures hang on sleepy riders, sneak sips of coffee, and of course, are similarly engrossed in their phones.Subway Doodle begins while Rubin is en route to a destination—it’s how the series was first born. “I started sketching on my iPad during my commute just to pass the time. Self-Taught Artist Discovers Incredible Painting Skills While Taking Care of His Sick Dog

Derbyshire-based painter Darren Reid creates stunning, photorealistic landscapes of serene seascapes, expansive landscapes, and bustling cityscapes. Each work, when looked at closely enough, reveals a layer of acrylic detail that heightens the painting to a hyperrealistic level. A road is not just a road, but a pointillist blend of colors (think Seurat or Pissarro) that fuse together when looked at to play tricks on the viewer’s eye. Reid has mastered a strange and awesome technique: how to take impressionist skills and turn them into reality. This Spinning Illusion Is Obviously Some Sort of Light Magic

I don’t know how these tiny dancers got trapped inside this spinning zoetrope but it’s the only explanation I can come up with for this insane light animation. Their movements are so smooth, and the shining light captures the grace of their dance so well that I’m sure some sort of magic has to be at play here.

Hand-carving blocks of wood down to perfection, he then paints his pieces to mimic the intricate shading and details that are naturally found in each food item—you would never be able to guess that his sardines started their lives on land instead of sea. Just be careful not to mistake Kawasaki’s creations for the real thing, or you might lose a tooth to a chunk of driftwood that looks a lot like a tempting chocolate bar.The delectable-looking pieces take about 2-3 hours to complete, which is amazing considering the amount of detail apparent within each tiny recreation. Alluring Illusions of Technicolor Portals Are Actually 2D Wall Paintings

We already know German artist 1010 for his vivid murals, which appear like multilayered, technicolor portals into parallel dimensions. Now, he has opened a new show at Milan’s 10 A.M. ART gallery, with an exhibition that includes not only a mural across the building’s entire exterior in his hallmark style, but also a collection of paintings displayed inside. Though smaller in scale than his street art, these new works might be even more remarkable. Artist Spends Over 8 Hours Recreating Iconic Paintings on an Etch A Sketch

For most of us, the Etch A Sketch is just a toy, but for artist Jane Labowitch, it’s an unconventional canvas and tool for her intricate drawings. Twisting and turning the two plastic knobs, she’s recreated one of history’s most iconic pointillist paintings: Georges Seurat’s 1884 masterpiece, A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. It took Labowitch eight and a half hours to render its likeness—all while she was sitting in front of the original piece at the Art Institute of Chicago. The results are impressive, to say the least. Especially when held up next to Seurat’s painting, it’s made abundantly clear that Labowitch has managed to capture the essence of the masterpiece’s composition. Labowitch has been honing her craft for nearly all her life. “I’ve been pretty consistently using an Etch A Sketch as an artistic medium since I first started playing with the toy when I was 4,” she told Chicagoist.
